Boysenberry, a unique blend high in antioxidants

This lesser known berry has some intriguing health properties that are just starting to be appreciated by the general public. What are the health benefits of boysenberries and why should you consider adding them to your diet. The purple-blue berry known as the boysenberry is actually a cross between a Pacific blackberry and a raspberry.


Along with other berries, they are powerful antioxidants . Boysenberries contain ellagic acid, a compound known for its potent anticarcinogen, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Boysenberries also boast a high ratio of free ellagic acid to total ellagitannins, which makes it easier for your body to digest the ellagic acid. Boysenberries out-rank marionberries and evergreen blackberries in ellagic acid, as well as in the other important nutritional compounds, some other health benefits include;

Brain health boysenberries are a rich source of anthocyanins, natural antioxidants which help to maintain healthy brain cells and protect against oxidative damage that leads to brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease. They also appear to play a role in boosting memory.

Anti-inflammatory and cancer inhibitory properties in preliminary studies, and may be particularly effective against tumours of the colon and esophagus,  throat, vocal cords, esophagus, stomach, colon and lung due to high vitamin c content.

Cholesterol Boysenberries are a cholesterol free food which is good news for people trying to reduce their levels, high cholesterol leads to a high risk of heart disease and stroke.

Antioxidant properties are very high as with other berries due to anthocyanins which act as antioxidants to repair damage caused by free radicals. Anthocyanins give boysenberries their deep colour. Boysenberries provide almost twice the antioxidant protection from free radicals.

Weight loss

Low calories Boysenberries are a fat-free fruit treat that are low in calories. At only sixty-six calories per cup.

Fibre One cup serving has seven grams of soluble fibre which helps to food move quickly through the digestive process.


Collagen  Boysenberries include vitamin C, calcium and dietary fibre. Vitamin C is important to the development of collagen in bones, muscles, cartilage and blood vessels.

Calcium gives you strong teeth and bones, and also plays a role in maintaining a  healthy circulatory system.


Boysenberries, add these little black beauties as a smash to buckwheat waffles with coconut yoghurt and a drizzle of maple syrup for a delicious Sunday brunch treat.

Lightly roast them for a  Savvy addition to salads, sauces and dressings.

Infuse in a little moscato and top with a dolop of cultured cream and black rice crisp for a delectable summer dessert.

Their slightly tangy taste can be enjoyed fresh by the handful or made into a lighter, less sugary style of jams, jellies, syrups, sauces, and pie fillings.

Great in smoothies with some oats, yogurt & honey or a guilt free snack.
