The Truth About Long-Term Weight Loss: Why Fad Diets Fail and What Works

The real truth about weight loss is that it isn’t some new fad diet that will be gone next year, after you’ve shed the kilos and put them all back on again. There’s a lot of money to be made from the growing problems caused by the Western diet, and many companies just want to sell you a quick fix. They don’t care about your long-lasting results.

Diet matters most

Exercise is important, but fitness experts, including Australian trainer Michelle Bridges, often point out that most of your weight-loss results come down to what you eat. Research backs this up: it’s far easier to cut kilojoules through food than to burn them off.

Quick fixes don’t last

Meal replacement shakes aren’t the long-term answer either. They can have a place under medical supervision, but they don’t teach you how to eat well, and when you go back to regular food without new habits, the weight often returns.

What really works

  • Real food, real exercise and real commitment.
  • A goal, plus a plan to sustain your results once you’ve reached it.
  • Support. People who have support before, during and after making a change are far more likely to keep the weight off.
